Maunawila Heiau is located on a 9-acre property in the ahupuaʻa (land division from mountain to sea) of Hauʻula and was formerly owned by the McGregor family.

After many years, the property was put into a trust and purchased by Hawaiʻi Land Trust (HILT ) with help of the Hauʻula Community Association (HCA) and other charitable donations.
